The world's tiniest AI supercomputer powers the four-legged robot.
Xiaomi today revealed the CyberDog, an open-source quadruped robot that users can "build upon" to create their own robo-canine applications. According to a Xiaomi blog post, the robot is powered by a modified version of NVIDIA's Jetson Xavier NX, the world's smallest AI supercomputer.
The sophisticated AI module can be used for a variety of tasks, including having the robot recognize and obey its master - let's just hope it doesn't start questioning the roles of master and servant, or we'll end up living in a cyber doggo dystopia.
CyberDog is equipped with 11 sensors, including touch and ultrasonic sensors, that allow it to "interact with its environment." The robot's cameras also allow it to track an assigned person and avoid impediments in its near environment. It can even recognize a person in a crowd and tag them to follow them, which is really alarming. "When combined with human posture and face recognition tracking, CyberDog can follow its owner and dart around obstacles," Xiaomi said in a statement.
CyberDog is yet another robot that resembles Boston Dynamics' Spot robot uncannily. Another recent example is Weilan's AlphaDog, a robot that looks eerily similar to Spot but is primarily targeted at the commercial market.
From the high-performance servo developed in-house to centimeter-scale obstacle avoidance and navigation, everything that makes
All of these robots employ cutting-edge robotics technology to build a nimble machine capable of navigating a variety of terrains, allowing them to be used for disaster relief and a variety of other applications targeted at preventing humans from placing themselves in danger.
Taking advantage of an open-source robotics community's "passion"
In the case of Xiaomi's CyberDog, the company claims it will begin by distributing 1,000 units to "Xiaomi fans, engineers, and robotics aficionados to collectively explore the great potential of CyberDog." The goal is to tap into the enthusiasm of a Xiaomi-hosted open-source robotics community to come up with new uses for the equipment.
Of course, Xiaomi will not be handing out these devices for free. Anyone interested in participating in the program must pay 9,999 yuan (roughly $1,540) to obtain one of the machines and begin plotting their insane schemes.
Unplanned applications could go popular via films displaying what the robot can do, making this an interesting experiment to watch.
Since the commercial release of Spot the robot, Boston Dynamics has had a few unfavorable public relations problems, including a YouTuber teaching the machine to urinate beer and the French army using it for combat training. The possibilities are unlimited when the machine's applications are limited only by the user's imagination.
