McGill University scientists created the strongest and toughest glass known.
McGill University researchers have developed a harder and tougher glass based on the inner layer of mollusc shells. The new material, rather of shattering on impact, has the durability of plastic and might be utilized to improve cell phone screens in the future, among other things.
While tempering and laminating can assist reinforce glass, they are both expensive and ineffective once the surface has been damaged. "Up until now, high strength, toughness, and transparency had to be traded off. "Our novel material is not only three times stronger than regular glass, but it's also more than five times more fracture-resistant," explains Allen Ehrlicher, an Associate Professor at McGill University's Department of Bioengineering.
Nature is the ultimate designer.
The scientist was inspired by nature and developed a new glass and acrylic composite material that looks like nacre or mother of pearl. "Nature is a master of architecture. "Understanding the structure and function of biological materials provides inspiration and, in some cases, blueprints for novel materials," adds Ehrlicher.
"Nacre combines the stiffness of a stiff substance and the longevity of a soft material," he continues, "offering it the best of all worlds." "It's made up of stiff bits of chalk-like substance coated with very elastic soft proteins." This structure has incredible strength, being 3000 times stronger than the components that make it up."
The scientists reproduced the architecture of nacre with layers of glass flakes and acrylic, resulting in an extremely strong yet opaque material that can be made quickly and cheaply. They then took the composite a step further by making it optically transparent. "We made the acrylic completely mix with the glass to form a genuinely transparent composite by tweaking the refractive index of the acrylic," says lead author Ali Amini, a Postdoctoral Researcher at McGill. They plan to improve it in the future by introducing smart technology that allows the glass to change features like color, dynamics, and conductivity.
Flexible glass was a lost invention.
Flexible glass is thought to have been invented during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar. The creator presented the Emperor with a drinking bowl constructed of the substance, according to famous historical accounts by Roman authors Gaius Plinius Secundus and Petronius. When the bowl was put to the test to see if it could be broken, it just dented rather than breaking.
Tiberius had the inventor beheaded after he declared he was the only one who knew how to make the substance, believing that the glass would devalue gold and silver because it was more valuable.
"When I think about Tiberius' story, I'm delighted our material invention leads to publishing rather than execution," Ehrlicher says.
