Allow light to shine! Reading glasses could one day be made of ultra-thin film.
The Australian National University (ANU) researchers have created a new technology that allows humans to see clearly in the dark, changing night vision.
The thin layer is ultra-compact and could one day operate on conventional glasses, according to a recent article published in Advanced Photonics.
The new prototype technology, which is based on tiny crystals, might be utilized for defense as well as making it safer to drive at night and walk home after dark, according to the researchers.
The team also claims that the work of police and security personnel who use night vision on a regular basis will be easier and safer, minimizing chronic neck problems caused by conventional mass night-vision gear. Dr. Rocio Camacho Morales, the lead researcher, remarked, "We have made the unseen visible."
"Our technology can convert infrared light, which is ordinarily invisible to the human eye, into visuals that people can see clearly – even at a distance."
"We've created a very thin film made up of nanometer-scale crystals that is hundreds of times thinner than a human hair and can be placed straight on glasses to act as a filter, allowing you to see in the dark."
The technology is exceedingly light, inexpensive, and simple to mass-produce, making it accessible to ordinary people.
High-end infrared imaging technology currently requires cryogenic freezing to function and is expensive to manufacture. At room temperature, this new technology works. The new technology employed meta-surfaces, or thin films, to alter light in novel ways, according to Dragomir Neshev, Director of the ARC Centre for Excellence in Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) and ANU Professor of Physics.
Professor Neshev stated, "This is the first time in the world that infrared light has been successfully turned into visible images in an ultra-thin screen."
"It's a pretty exciting development, and we know it's going to revolutionize the night vision environment forever."
An international team of researchers from TMOS, ANU, Nottingham Trent University, UNSW, and European partners created the new technology.
The nanoscale crystal films were developed by Mohsen Rahmani, the Leader of Nottingham Trent University's School of Science and Technology's Advanced Optics and Photonics Lab.
